The 29th Irish Osteoporosis Society Annual Medical Conference for Health Professionals will explore the latest developments in osteoporosis care
The Irish Osteoporosis Society (IOS), founded by Prof Moira O’Brien in 1996, supports patients living with osteoporosis and their families, and provides up-to-date information to health professionals on all aspects of bone health. Serving people across Ireland, the Society emphasises the importance of maintaining strong bone health for the entire population.
The 29th IOS Annual Medical Conference for Health Professionals will be held virtually on Saturday 18 October 2025.
The meeting will begin with an opening address by Prof O’Brien, President of the IOS.
The first keynote lecture, ‘My patient has osteoporosis on DXA – What next?’ will be delivered by Prof Bernard Walsh, Consultant Physician and Geriatrician with the Bone Health Unit, St James’s Hospital, Dublin, and Trinity College Dublin. He will guide participants through the essential steps in management once osteoporosis is identified through bone density scanning.
Next, Ms Anne Power, Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Chronic Disease Management, Wexford Residential Intellectual Disability Service, will present an update on the screening project for people with intellectual disability.
Mr Nicholas Flood, Osteopath, Osteopathic Life Clinic, Leopardstown, Dublin, will speak on treating hot flushes and lack of sleep using lymphatic techniques. His combined experience in osteopathy, naturopathy and cranial techniques offers a complementary approach to managing symptoms that affect quality of life.
A question-and-answer session will allow attendees to engage with the morning speakers and clarify clinical questions. After a short break, the second part of the morning will address further dimensions of care.
Ms Aoife Ní Eochaidh, Chartered Physiotherapist and Clinical Specialist in Pelvic Health, Bon Secours Consultant’s Clinic, Renmore, Galway, will discuss pelvic health issues in men and women with bone health concerns.
Ms Elaine McGowan, Dietitian, will follow with a presentation on nutrition and its role in supporting
bone strength.
Ms Ciara Shields, Chartered Physiotherapist and Clinical Specialist in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, will conclude this segment with guidance on which exercises those with bone loss should avoid.
Following a question-and-answer session, oral abstracts will be presented, offering a chance to share emerging research and clinical findings.

The afternoon programme turns to medical therapies for osteoporosis.
Dr Donal Fitzpatrick, Consultant Geriatrician, Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin, will talk about denosumab and what clinicians need to know about its use.
Then Dr Kevin McCarroll, Consultant Physician and Geriatrician in the Bone Health Unit, St James’s Hospital, Dublin, will explain how romosozumab works and how it fits into treatment algorithms. An extended question-and-answer session will follow.
Closing the conference, there will be abstract award presentations and concluding remarks by Prof O’Brien.
The meeting promises a well-rounded programme combining evidence-based updates and multidisciplinary perspectives. It is designed for physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, dietitians and all professionals involved in bone health who are seeking both practical guidance and exposure to new developments in osteoporosis care.
