Mr Christopher Sweeney, School of Medicine, University College Cork, was awarded the Sir William Wilde Medal for the Best Poster presentation for his study The preparedness of ophthalmologists to manage an anaphylactic reaction post fluorescein angiography. Outlining the premise of his research at the Irish College of Ophthalmologists (ICO) Annual Conference 2025, Mr Sweeney explained that anaphylaxis following intravenous fluorescein angiography is a rare, but potentially fatal, complication of this diagnostic test and that prompt recognition and treatment can be lifesaving.
Dr Brian Woods, Ophthalmology SpR and Irish Clinical Academic Training Fellow, was awarded the Barbara Knox Medal for the Best Paper presentation. Dr Woods’s paper, Automated retinal vessel analysis reveals early treatment effects of acetazolamide in idiopathic intracranial hypertension, outlined a study that employed an automated vessel measurement technique to identify and quantify retinal vascular changes following acetazolamide (ACZ) therapy. ACZ lowers cerebrospinal fluid pressure and reduces retinal venule diameter in individuals with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). In his paper, Dr Woods concluded that the response to ACZ can be detected and quantified in patients with IIH via automated analysis of retinal vasculature.
