The Irish Osteoporosis Society (IOS) 2025 Annual Medical Conference for Health Professionals was held virtually on Saturday 18 October.

The well-attended conference featured presentations from expert speakers on a wide range of topical issues relating to osteoporosis.

More women die from the secondary effects of osteoporosis than the combined deaths of cancer of the ovaries, cervix and uterus, and the secondary effects of fractures include loss of independence and increased risk of premature death. Therefore, osteoporosis is a major health concern, IOS President Prof Moira O’Brien told the Medical Independent.

A key highlight of this year’s conference, Prof O’Brien said, was presenting Ms Michele O’Brien, CEO of the IOS, with the Prof Moira O’Brien IOS Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was given in recognition of her dedication and contributions to the field of osteoporosis, and the profound impact on those with whom she has come into contact with, during her 25 years of service.

Prof O’Brien also thanked all the speakers, research winners, and attendees for their work in furthering knowledge on the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in Ireland.
