Upcoming conference: Postnatal care in the community – closing the gaps

By Denise Doherty - 15th Aug 2025

An exciting range of topics and expert speakers are part of the upcoming conference, ‘Postnatal care in the community – closing the gaps’, which will take place at the Mayo Education Centre, St Mary’s Campus, Westport Road, Co Mayo on 9 September, 2025.

The diverse line-up includes advanced midwife practitioners specialising in maternity services within the acute sector – focusing on postnatal care and gestational diabetes – and midwives leading skills and drills workshops on abdominal palpation, foetal heart monitoring, and newborn care.

Guest speakers will also include lactation consultants, a physiotherapist covering pelvic floor health and postpartum recovery, and a community doctor discussing reflux management and tongue tie. Additionally, a psychiatrist will discuss postnatal depression and a psychologist will address infant mental health and perinatal mental health.

The event will feature interactive Q&A sessions throughout, along with a large exhibitor area providing valuable resources and information on various child and maternal health services and systems.

Nursing in Practice Ireland spoke with conference organiser Mairead Murphy, HSE Professional Development Coordinator for General Practice Nursing, ahead of the upcoming event. She described the conference design as “a collaborative approach, fostering stronger integration between the acute maternity sector and community maternity services”.

Mairead also extended a message to midwives working in general practice, community midwives, and public health nurses, saying: “This will be a highly informative day covering key topics relevant to your roles and professional development. From speaking to many of you, there were very few CPD opportunities tailored specifically to postnatal care and midwifery in general practice/community, so this conference aims to address that gap and support your continued learning, competencies, and skills.”

The event is free to attend, but places are limited to 50, so early booking is strongly advised. There are a small number of tickets left. Booking is available via the link below which also includes all event details.
