The Irish Nurses and Midwives’ Organisation (INMO) has condemned the targeting of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Northern Gaza. INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha described the recent attack in Northern Gaza as “shameful”, and called for urgent international action in response to the “flagrant and deliberate breaches of international humanitarian law”.
“Our fellow nurses, midwives, and healthcare workers in Gaza need immediate international intervention. They have tried their best to provide life-saving care despite relentless targeting of their workplaces. We echo the calls by the World Health Organisation that healthcare facilities, workers, and patients should be off limits.
“Healthcare workers, including nurses and midwives, deserve a safe work environment free from threats or violence. Those who target them or their workplaces must be held accountable and brought to justice.”
Eight Palestinian children arrived in Dublin in December to receive healthcare, the Department of Health confirmed. The children were accompanied by eight carers and 11 siblings.
Government approval was secured in September for Ireland to evacuate a number of sick children from Gaza for treatment and care, following an appeal from the World Health Organisation. The group travelled on a plane provided by the Slovakian government for the medical evacuation and were accompanied by three medical doctors from the HSE and a translator.
Health Minister Stephen Donnelly said he was “pleased that the first medical evacuation of Palestinian children and their carers/guardians to Ireland has now happened” and that the Irish health service is providing care to these children.
