The number of RAMPs had initially been slow to increase due to the difficulty in identifying areas where an extended scope of advanced practice would fit within maternity services.
There are now AMPS in all 19 maternity units, with some units having several AMPs and an increased number of AMPs registering annually. RAMP job descriptions and caseloads are varied based on the caseload they provide care for.
Currently, RAMPs provide care within midwifery led continuity of care models, emergency assessment, perinatal mental health, postnatal maternal morbidity, diabetes, female health, urodynamics, haematology and maternal medicine, intrapartum care and sexual assault and trauma, and vaginal birth after section care.
Midwifery-led Project of the Year Winner, Irish Healthcare Centre Awards 2025
The Birth Reflection Clinic at Wexford General Hospital
The Birth Reflection Clinic at Wexford General Hospital was honoured with the Midwifery-led Project of the Year award at the 2025 Irish Healthcare Centre Awards, recognising its innovative contribution to maternity services in Ireland. Launched in October 2023 by Advanced Midwife Practitioner (AMP) Orla Mongan, the clinic provides a structured, compassionate service offering women a safe space for listening, debriefing, and support following their maternity care journey.

The service was developed in response to insights from Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) reports and the National Maternity Experience Survey, both of which highlighted the pressing need for improved postnatal support and reflective care pathways. By addressing these gaps, the clinic exemplifies excellence in midwifery-led care, promoting recovery, empowerment, and emotional wellbeing for women in the postnatal period.
Sligo University Hospital. Winner, Irish Healthcare Centre Awards 2025
Sligo University Hospital won the Healthcare Initiative award in the General Hospital Model 2 and 3 category at the Irish Healthcare Centre Awards 2025 for its innovative ‘Enhanced recovery after Caesarean birth’ programme. This midwifery-led initiative, developed in close collaboration with theatre teams, was designed to optimise recovery for mothers following Caesarean delivery, significantly improving postnatal outcomes and patient care.
Tile Media: Altraí na hÉireann – Nurses of Ireland
Tile Media is proud to announce Altraí na hÉireann, a new two-part series commissioned by TG4 and Coimisiún na Meán. This powerful series will celebrate the legacy, resilience, and evolution of Irish nursing over the last 60 years, and provide a heartfelt tribute to the incredible story of Irish nurses today.
We are currently seeking nurses and midwives from all backgrounds to share their stories, experiences, and insights. Whether you are retired, newly qualified, or still on the frontline, your experiences are valuable. Whether you are an advanced practitioner, a district nurse, a midwife, or staff nurse – whether you work in mental health, intensive care, paediatrics, general practice or beyond – we would love to hear from you.
We are interested in what prompts someone to become a nurse in Ireland. What motivates you to keep going through all the challenges? What has shaped your journey? We are especially seeking out Irish-speaking nurses!
Altraí na hÉireann is a unique opportunity to honour the nursing profession through the people who have lived it. There is a nurse in many families in Ireland, and even for those without one, everyone has been touched by the care of a nurse. This series is a tribute to a profession that is integral to the fabric of Irish life. It is for the many Irish mothers who are nurses.
It is for the carers, the change-makers and advocates, whose skills and passion have defined the profession. It is for the Irish nurses who made their mark abroad, but also the migrant nurses who enrich Irish healthcare today. It is time to celebrate the unsung heroes.
