Gathering for Generalism

By Mindo - 04th Dec 2019

Pictured at the ICGP Winter Meeting in Athlone last month are L-R: Dr Rukshan Goonewardena, Director, Network of Establishing GPs (NEGs), ICGP; Dr Mary Favier, President, ICGP; and Dr John Cox, Chair, ICGP. Themed ‘The art of generalism in general practice’, the conference featured a wide range of presentations and discussions, including on the challenges of benzodiazepine prescribing, setting up minor surgical services, and planetary health and general practice. Dr Goonewardena of NEGs, which organised the meeting, told the Medical Independent around 250 GPs were in attendance. While noting the good news regarding a record number of applications for GP training in 2020, Dr Goonewardena said retaining GPs in the system remains challenging. “GPs want to do more, but many feel they are fire-fighting all the time,” he added.
