The HSE’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Automation Centre of Excellence (CoE) will have its expanded roles and responsibilities outlined by the third quarter of this year, the Medical Independent (MI) has learned.
Established in 2024, the CoE is central to the Executive’s efforts to integrate AI across the health service. As previously reported by MI, HIQA is currently developing guidelines for the use of AI in health and social care, while the Department of Health and the HSE are jointly working on a national AI strategy.
At the HSE performance committee meeting in April, members were informed that an implementation framework for the upcoming strategy is in development.
This will include defining the CoE’s expanded remit, a HSE spokesperson confirmed.
Both the strategy and framework are scheduled for publication in the coming months.
The HSE has previously stated that the CoE is exploring ways to enhance clinical care, particularly in radiology, as well as administrative processes, such as human resources and financial workflows.
Separately, the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin, has become the first hospital in the country to launch a Centre for AI and Digital Health. Based at the Pillar Centre for Transformative Healthcare, the new hub will apply AI solutions to clinical challenges and develop research-driven tools to improve patient care and outcomes.
The centre is a collaborative initiative involving hospital leadership, consultants, and researchers, and is expected to deliver a “tangible difference in patient care”, according to the hospital.
