There has been an increase in the number of doctors presenting to the Practitioner Health Matters Programme (PHMP), according to the PHMP’s new annual report.
The PHMP was launched in 2015 and provides a confidential service to doctors, dentists and pharmacists who may be experiencing stress, burnout, mental health, or substance use issues.
The 2024 PHMP annual report noted that there were 113 new presentations last year, which compares to 107 new presentations in 2023.
Of those new presentations in 2024, 101 were doctors. As has been the case in previous years, there were more females presenting than males and the age profile reflects a younger age cohort, with 81 doctors in the younger age category (26-49 years).
“Practitioner Health had another busy year in 2024,” wrote Dr Íde Delargy, Medical Director of the PHMP, in the report’s introduction. “The number of presentations has increased once more and the service is becoming better known.”
“Our service is designed to support those who are struggling and to encourage them to seek independent, confidential help,” according to Dr Delargy.
“We provide non-judgemental and compassionate care. We can support someone who is finding it difficult to navigate workplace issues and help them to cope while doing that. Our advice is independent, practical and achievable, which practitioners really appreciate.”
