The HSE is seeking contractors to undertake the planned expansion of an inpatient ward at University Hospital Limerick (UHL).
The project involves the expansion of the existing 24-bed ward constructed under emergency legislation during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The work will take two years to complete, according to tender documents issued recently by the Executive. It is estimated that the construction will cost around €91 million.
“The project comprises the vertical expansion of an existing 24-bed ward (Block G) building, which was constructed under emergency legislation during the Covid-19 pandemic…,” according to the tender.
“The vertical expansion will provide 72 additional beds across three new ward levels, together with staff and ancillary accommodation.”
The deadline for receipt of tender submissions to undertake the work is 11 September 2026.
The tender comes as the hospital continues to experience severe capacity issues.
According to the INMO, of the 617 patients waiting without a bed in hospitals across the country following the August bank holiday weekend, 130 were in UHL.
