Limerick to host World Rural Health Conference 2022

By Mindo - 14th Oct 2019

Ireland will host the World Organisation of Family Doctors (WONCA) World Rural Health Conference in Limerick in June 2022.

The announcement was made at the World Rural Health Conference 2019, which is currently taking place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States.

Prof Liam Glynn, Professor of General Practice, University of Limerick Graduate Entry Medical School (UL GEMS), confirmed via twitter that UL would be hosting the conference.

The bid for the summit was a collaboration between UL GEMS, the Rural, Island and Dispensing Doctors of Ireland, and the ICGP.

Speaking at the annual conference of Rural, Island and Dispensing Doctors, held in Athlone earlier this month, Chairperson Dr Jerry Cowley said winning the bid would be “a big deal”.

He also said the student infrastructure in Limerick would represent good value for delegates, particularly those attending from developing countries.

“Putting ourselves on a world stage will certainly help our cause [in Irish rural practice], I believe,” added Dr Cowley.

He said there was “a lot of support” for the bid from a range of entities.
