Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) is planning to design a leadership and management development programme for clinical specialty leads (CSLs) ahead of the opening of the New Children’s Hospital.
According to tender documents, CHI is seeking a single provider to design and deliver the programme. There are currently 34 CSLs in post.
Last year, HIQA recommended the appointment of leads to each clinical specialty at CHI to establish more distinct lines of authority and accountability.
The recommendation was made in the statutory review of the use of implantable medical devices at CHI, including the use of non-CE marked springs in spinal surgery at CHI at Temple Street.
“Central to the successful delivery of the transformation programme will be the leadership provided by the CSLs, many of whom have recently been appointed,” CHI outlined in its tender document.
“In addition to leading their teams in delivery of paediatric services, the CSLs will also be providing strong leadership during the transition to the [National Children’s Hospital] when all the teams from across the current sites integrate.”
According to CHI, the bespoke programme would equip CSLs with the expertise needed to guide their specialty through the transition to the new hospital site and the subsequent period as the hospital becomes established.
The programme must help CSLs to strengthen strategic decision-making and communication effectiveness and “enhance confidence in leading uncertainty and large-scale change”. It will also provide skills to strengthen clinical governance.
The programme will “prepare CSLs to play a core role in cross-site integration in 2026/27” and “support competence in managing difficult conversations, conflict resolution, and generational diversity”.
