New project to provide accommodation for Coombe staff

By David Lynch - 07th Jul 2024

A project to provide hotel or “similar accommodation” for new international staff at the Coombe Hospital in Dublin has been approved, this newspaper has been informed.

Difficulties related to staff accommodation were raised at a meeting of the Coombe board of guardians and directors in November.

According to minutes seen by the Medical Independent (MI) following a Freedom of Information request, board members discussed a proposal from hospital management with “regard to assisting new overseas staff members, commencing with midwives and nurses, with transitional accommodation arrangements on their arrival in Ireland”.

The minutes noted that a longer-term solution to reinstate staff accommodation on site was also being considered.

The availability of suitable accommodation for staff, and particularly for those relocating to Ireland, is “of ongoing importance” for the management and board of the Coombe, a hospital spokesperson told MI.

The hospital has “a small number” of bedrooms on campus available for such staff. In addition, the board recently approved, “as a proof-of-concept project, for the hospital to obtain hotel or similar accommodation for a limited period of no more
than three months, and to accommodate a maximum of six people on their arrival from overseas, while they sourced their
own accommodation.”

“These staff members contribute towards the cost of this accommodation in line with HSE international recruitment guidelines and terms.”

In November 2023, MI reported that the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dún Laoghaire had established a working group to examine the availability of accommodation for prospective staff.
