NAGP chair ‘hopeful’ amid controversy

By Mindo - 14th May 2019

NAGP Chairperson Dr Andy Jordan has said he is optimistic a rescue package to ensure the future of the Association will be in place very shortly.

Speaking to the Medical Independent (MI), Dr Jordan maintained that the NAGP always had financial issues as it “started from nothing” and there was nothing new regarding the fact it had “financial woes”.

“Our only revenue stream is membership fees. We don’t have a financial services branch to bolster the union like the IMO…perhaps this [other revenue streams] is something we need to look at in the future,’ Dr Jordan said.

He expressed hope that a rescue package would be secured soon, with a recent NAGP correspondence to members stating that it had “been approached by other agencies and bodies offering support including assistance from organisations outside of this jurisdiction. They are keen to offer their services free of charge.”

In the correspondence, NAGP CEO Mr Chris Goodey and Dr Jordan said they would “continue to fight for general practice”.

“We are taking legal advice with regard to defamation cases against those involved in this weekend’s negative media commentary,” the notice read.

“It is inexplicable that such a small organisation is attracting such media attention.”

When asked for more details about the legal advice being sought, Dr Jordan did not wish to comment. He said he felt all former council members still had obligations to the Association and claimed they each had a duty to protect its future. Dr Jordan added that he would have several issues with, and would disagree with, some recent media commentary about the Association.

Meanwhile, a number of former council members have submitted complaints to the Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement  regarding alleged NAGP practices.

MI understands a complaint by one former council member alleges a failure by the NAGP “to keep adequate accounting records” and raises serious questions about its alleged conduct in respect of its approach to creditors.

The complaint also claims the NAGP has registered an incorrect address in relation to where its business is carried out.

The NAGP AGM is due to take place on 15 June, when members will be asked to vote on governance changes within the Association.
