A total of 50 workplaces in Ireland took part in the challenge, with staff at SVUH clocking up 1,300km more than their nearest workplace rival.
SVUH has an average of 300 staff cycling to work every day. The hospital was previously awarded Smarter Travel ‘Workplace Sustainable Travel Champions of the Year’ and ‘Cycling Workplace of the Year’ in 2015.
The initiative was led by the Department of Preventive Medicine and Health Promotion, and supported by the hospital’s Employee Wellness Committee. Ms Edel Byrne, Health Promotion Officer, who co-ordinated the SVUH Cycling Challenge, was awarded ‘Best Workplace Co-ordinator’.
Commenting at the awards, she said: “The Smarter Travel Cycling Challenge is an event hospital staff look forward to on an annual basis.
“We are very proud of our staff members’ achievement in winning this award. Congratulations to everyone who took part this year and we look forward to getting even more staff on their bikes in time for next year’s challenge”.
This year, 52 European cities participated in the European Cycle Challenge and the total distance logged by SVUH staff also contributed to ‘Team Dublin’, who finished in 13th position in Europe overall.
