What exactly is the Vasco da Gama Movement?

    26 Jun 2014

Dear Editor, Following on from the recent articles published in the Medical Independent about various aspects of the Vasco da Gama Movement (VdGM), I felt compelled to write to you. In my role as Director of the ICGP Network of Establishing GPs (NEGs), I am commonly asked ‘What is the Vasco da Gama Movement?’ However, since publication of your articles, the number of queries has increased. I therefore felt it might help if I were to provide some basic information about the VdGM. I suspect the obvious lack of awareness simply reflects that amongst Irish GP trainees and members of NEGs, there is not yet a culture of engagement as a result of the VdGM being only 10 years old.

Buy into a good environmental IDEA

    15 May 2014

Dear Editor, The Irish Doctors Environmental Association (IDEA) was founded by doctors and an educator 15 years ago who were aware that the environment was becoming increasingly toxic as a result of human activity. There was a realisation that we had developed the ‘throwaway society’ to the extent that what was thrown ‘away’ was actually returning and was incompatible with a healthy existence.

A lot of thought has gone into polytrauma

Dr Chris Luke Consultant In Emergency Medicine, Cork University Hospital. | 01 May 2014

Dear Editor, In the light of Prof John McElwain’s puzzling comments (Medical Independent, 3.4.2014) about a “central, national polytrauma plan for Ireland” being “long overdue” and there being “no input whatsoever into it, no planning …(or) joined up thinking”, may I take the opportunity to quote another eminent professor?
