Recruitment issues in Portiuncula Hospital

Fianna Fáil Deputy Robert Troy recently submitted a parliamentary question on staffing issues in the hospital and the fact that most of the consultants in the hospital were acting as locums.

In response, the hospital’s General Manager Mr Chris Kane stated that the Saolta University Health Care Group is in the process of recruiting consultant physicians for the hospital.

“There have been a number of permanent consultants who have transferred to other positions and one consultant has retired,” according to Mr Kane.

Currently, there are five consultant physicians in the hospital, of which one is permanent and one candidate has been selected from the initial advertisement campaign and is being processed for appointment in the coming months.

Mr Kane said the remaining posts have been re-advertised and he anticipates that at least one or two more of these will be filled. “I also wish to advise that there is no reduction in service and the hospital is endeavouring to ensure that the locums employed are more long-term to provide continuity; this is challenging due to recruitment of consultants nationally,” he stated.
