The PHA has also called for a multi-annual funding commitment of €300m up to 2020 as well as removing private patients from the public hospital system “as recommended in the Future of Healthcare Report”.
”The national figures currently lie at an all-time high with almost 692,000 patients now waiting for treatment or review in public hospitals, up 750 since July,” said PHA CEO Mr Simon Nugent.
“Multi-annual funding of the NTPF would bring funding certainty and allow private hospitals allocate resources and make necessary investments, to help reduce the waiting lists as quickly as possible. The piecemeal approach taken to date is not making any discernible impact and is resulting in poor value for money for the taxpayer.”
The PHA is also seeking increased tax relief on health insurance contributions by raising the cap on the basic rate income tax relief from €1,000 to €1,250 to “encourage people” to upgrade their policies.
