Saolta University Health Care Group’s board meeting minutes in October stated that the review was likely to be completed by the end of January, which was later than had been originally anticipated.
However, the report has again taken longer than expected to be finalised.
A spokesperson for Saolta told MI that the families have been advised that the Group is now in the final stages of the review process and Prof James Walker, the review Chairman, has indicated that he expects that the final overarching report will be completed by the end of the month.
“The families have also been advised that Saolta will be in contact again to outline the plans for the private circulation of their individual reports and the publication of the final report,” according to the spokesperson.
“When confirming the date that these reports will be provided to the families, arrangements will be made for them to meet with Prof Walker and his team, if they so wish. The Saolta Group has again apologised to the affected families for the delay in this process and has offered any services that they may require to support them in dealing with the issues that arise.”
The spokesperson noted that regular re-audits at the maternity unit in Portiuncula University Hospital have shown no continuing patient safety concerns arising from the issues identified.
“In relation to the delay in completing the review, this is due to the complexity and scale of the work to be undertaken, given the increase in the number of cases (18 in total) being reviewed,” the spokesperson added.
“In addition to meetings with families, there have been 250 staff interviews carried out involving the 18 cases. The Saolta Group regrets any distress that is being caused to the families involved.”
