Over €23,000 in expenses for Minister Varadkar for 2015

This included €14,900 paid to the Minister in subsistence and mileage claims, with €14,065 amounting to the total of mileage expenses. The rest, totalling €8,571, was paid on behalf of the Minister, mainly for foreign travel. Included in this was €3,953 that was spent on airfares and €1,821 for travel abroad for the St Patrick’s Day programme in 2015. Minister Varadkar visited Mexico for St Patrick’s Day in 2015.

These figures represent a significant increase on the Minister’s expenses in the Department for 2014, which came to a total of €8,104. However, the Minister was only in the Department of Health for half the year in 2014, having replaced former Minister James Reilly that summer.

Meanwhile, former Minister of State at the Department of Health Kathleen Lynch received €24,647 in expenses in 2015. This compared to a total of €19,821 in 2014.

The 2015 breakdown was €19,084 of expenses paid to Minister Lynch for mileage and subsistence. The remaining €5,563 was paid on behalf of the Minister, mainly for foreign travel. This included €1,921 for the Minister’s travel abroad for the 2015 St Patrick’s Day programme.

The former Minister lost her Dáil seat in February’s General Election.
