Board members are currently in place for just one of the Hospital Groups (Children’s Hospital Group), while five Groups have chairpersons, a Department of Health spokesperson told MI.
The spokesperson outlined that the Chairperson of the Dublin Midlands Hospital Group, Dr Frank Dolphin, resigned from his position on 18 August. The term of interim Chairperson of Saolta University Health Care Group Dr John Killeen expired on 31 October. Saolta University Health Care Group and UL Hospitals Group board appointments expired on 31 October.
The Department spokesperson added that it has commenced advertising through the Public Appointments Service (PAS) for candidates with the necessary expertise, competencies and experience for appointment to all of the Hospital Group boards, except the Children’s Hospital Group.
“The closing date for expressions of interest for the UL board and Saolta Chair has passed and assessment panels will be convened in November, following which the other boards will be advertised.”
The Hospital Groups were established in line with the Government’s programme for reform of the health service, initially on a non-statutory administrative basis, pending the establishment of Hospital Trusts.
The Department has previously said that the current administrative basis for Group board appointments needs to be replaced by a clear statutory one and it is intended to progress legislation to facilitate the establishment of Trusts by 2018, subject to operational readiness.
