Officials in the Departments of Health in the Republic and Northern Ireland exchanged a series of emails in December regarding MUP, according to documents released under Freedom of Information legislation.
In December 2015, the then Minister for Health Leo Varadkar said it was the Government’s intention to introduce MUP in the Republic at the same time as Northern Ireland.
A Department of Health spokesperson said MUP had been discussed at the most recent North-South Ministerial Council and remains a standing agenda item.
In the Republic, concerns have been expressed by doctors about the delay in passage of the Public Health (Alcohol) Bill.
