The RCPI confirmed to the Medical Independent (MI) that the new group will convene next month, although “membership has not been finalised as yet,” an RCPI spokesperson said.
This group will be the fifth policy group at the RCPI. Its most recently established group is the Physical Activity Policy Group, which was convened last November and is co-chaired by Dr Peter Wright, former Dean of the Faculty of Public Health, RCPI, and Prof Sean Gaine, Consultant Respiratory Physician, Mater Hospital, Dublin.
The other policy groups are in the areas of tobacco, obesity and alcohol.
“As part of its mission, RCPI seeks to promote health nationally and internationally and play a leading role in the delivery of high clinical standards and excellence in patient care,” an RCPI spokesperson told MI.
“The policy groups bring experts together to develop policies and have been very successful in influencing national health policy.
“Many of the policy proposals from the alcohol group report are contained in the Public Health Alcohol Bill and the obesity group’s recent report on treatment of obesity will inform a national obesity policy.”
