With the recent passing of Eamonn John Sullivan, Ireland has lost one of the few remaining living District Medical Officers (DMOs), who formed the backbone of the dispensary system, first introduced to the country in 1851.

As a doctor working in a premier teaching hospital in Dublin, I have the misfortune to regularly experience the plight and agony of many innocent Irish people, especially the elderly population, in the ED, in outpatients and in operating theatres.
