Latest treatments to be discussed at Breast Cancer Symposium

According to organisers “it is increasingly recognised that the needs of patients with metastatic (i.e. secondary) breast cancer are very different to those of patients who are being treated with earlier stages of the disease, or for those who have survived such treatment.

“Metastatic breast cancer patients face the daily reality of a life-threatening, usually incurable diagnosis, and also have to face the impositions caused by cancer treatments on an ongoing basis.”

The ‘Dare-2-Cure’ Symposium is aimed at patients, carers, clinicians and cancer researchers. It will provide a forum for an exchange of ideas between patients and the professionals who look after them. It will outline some of the latest treatments and future research directions.

Organisers say that the meeting is entirely independent of any drug company or other industry support and is being organised by the Cancer Clinical Research Trust.

The keynote speaker is Dr Linda Vahdat, Medical Oncologist from Weill Medical School, Cornell University Medical Centre in New York. Dr Vahdat is an internationally recognised expert in the drug treatment of metastatic breast cancer.

Other speakers include Professor Giuseppe Gullo, Professor John Crown, Professor John Armstrong, Professor Joe Duffy, Dr Norma O’Donovan, Dr Denis Collins.

Dr David Robert Grimes will deliver a talk on the topic of the coverage of cancer science in the media.
