IHCA annual conference set for Kilkenny

There will be a change in the Presidency of the Association before the annual meeting. Dr Gerard Crotty is the current President.

“Our President changes at the 11 June Council meeting,” IHCA Secretary General Mr Martin Varley told Medical Independent (MI).

The IHCA welcomed the recent appointment of new Minister for Health Simon Harris. It is expected that Minister Harris will be invited to address the IHCA Annual Conference.

In writing to Minister Harris upon his appointment, the IHCA outlined the urgent need for investment in frontline services to address the severe capacity constraints in acute hospital and mental health services, “as they are impacting adversely on the delivery of timely, high quality, safe care to patients”.

“International comparisons confirm that our acute services have one of the lowest numbers of practising doctors, a relatively low number of acute hospital beds and an excessively high bed occupancy rate,” said Dr Crotty.

“In recent years, Ireland has suffered a damaging medical brain drain, which has resulted in hundreds of approved hospital consultant posts remaining vacant or, at best, being filled on a temporary or agency basis.”
