You will be involved in diagnosis and treatment, reviewing treatment plans, online consultations by phone or video link and providing guidance to our clinical team. This is the type of activity that can be fitted into your day to suit your availability. You could work from home or add in a session from your current work place.     PARALYMPICS IRELAND: CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER

    Position Title: Chief Medical Officer Status: Contract for services on a fixed term part-time basis 1 day per week (48 weeks per year) until Dec 31st 2020. Full attendance at Paralympic Games in Tokyo with Team Ireland.

    This is an opportunity for a highly motivated, driven individual to play a key role within a multi-sport environment,
    to use their skills to support elite athletes with a disability, to lead up to the Paralympic Games
    in Tokyo 2020 and beyond.

    JOB PURPOSE
    As Chief Medical Officer, you will work as part of the medical services team for Paralympics Ireland
    and be responsible for the implementation of medical services to athletes, in the lead up to, during and
    after Tokyo 2020.
    The role will involve the medical management of athletes and strong, open communication with other
    members of the support team. You will be able to evidence a strong track record of delivery and operational
    excellence and can deal with a complex medical environment.

    SPECIFIC KEY TASKS
    1. Deliver Paralympics Ireland’s Medical Service/Programme for the Paralympic Games and other
    competitions in the lead up to Tokyo 2020. This will involve attendance at the Paralympic Games for
    a period to be determined, up to three weeks.
    2. Participate in any post competition debrief as requested by the Performance Operations Manager/
    Medical Services Co-ordinator. Contribute to the development of an ethos of elite performance
    among all panel members and support staff.
    3. Help Coordinate, in conjunction with the Medical Service Co-ordinator, and within the multi-disciplinary
    team, injury and illness care planning of these issues with integration of return to training
    and competition planning.
    4. Act as the clinical lead for all complex medical cases.
    5. To manage the relevant athlete information and referral within Paralympics Ireland through an
    in-depth reporting structure. This may involve referral to external professional providers at times
    and include planning for athletes moving to an appropriate external professional as part of a transition
    structure.
    6. Provide a responsive, accessible medical service consistent with Irish Sport Anti-doping Policies,
    to all PI panel athlete members as specified by Paralympics Ireland, both at home and at
    competition and camp venues, and any other location deemed appropriate to meet the requirements
    of the job role.
    7. Understands and informs the injury and illness prevention strategy, injury and illness reporting
    protocol requirements and individual sports service requirements.
    8. Maintain ongoing appropriate professional development.
    9. Assist athletes and coaches achieve their performance objectives through appropriate and effective
    medical support. Reporting care plans to appropriate people within a reasonable timeline
    consistent with needs of athletes and healthcare system.
    10. Keep clinic hours at defined times.
    11. Produce a service provision report to the High Performance Director on a monthly basis and
    prior to any camp or competition.
    12. Agree and implement an annual individual work programme with the High Performance Director,
    identifying key activities, priorities, personal objectives, timescales and performance indicators.
    13. Build and maintain effective medical partnership with the Lead Medical Consultant and the
    Sport Ireland Institute.
    14. Input on medical related elements of the Tokyo environmental strategy for the Games and monitor
    implementation of same.
    15. Undertake other duties as required from time to time by the CEO, High Performance Director
    or Medical Service Co-ordinator.

    PERSON SPECIFICATION – Chief Medical Officer

    ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
    • Appropriate Registration with the Irish Medical Council with Statutory Registration and Indemnity
    with appropriate CPD maintained as laid out by the Irish Medical Council.
    • General medical experience.
    • Postgraduate qualification/experience in Sports and Exercise Medicine.
    • Member of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (or international equivalent).
    • At least 5 years’ experience in elite sport.
    • Excellent communication skills to deal with colleagues and athletes effectively and with empathy.

    DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS
    • Proven experience in disability healthcare.
    • Experience in working and implementing a medical service within a multi-disciplinary team
    environment.
    • Proven experience implementing injury and illness prevention strategies in elite athletes.
    • Experience of international multi sports events.
    • Ability to be adaptable and perform in a pressurised environment.
    • Committed, dynamic and productive.
    • A flexible approach to hours required when necessary including the ability to attend evening
    and weekend meetings. Availability for full duration.
    • Clean driving license/mode of transport.
    • Understanding of sports structures in Ireland, including Paralympic sport.
    • Ability to think out of the box to deal with the people and medical or disability related issues
    that maybe encountered in Paralympic sports.

    A career in occupational medicine can draw from different specialties, most commonly from those who have trained in general practice or hospital medicine, but we also believe there is a role for doctors who have trained in psychiatry or who have an interest in orthopaedic or musculoskeletal medicine.

    Previous experience, or qualifications, in occupational medicine are an advantage but not an essential requirement. We are a training practice and will provide support to new doctors working in this field for the first time.
