“We are just finishing a feasibility study on a new ED and we are adding intensive care and HDU into it as well,” said Mr Duffy. “We are finalising that proposal to go to the HSE and Government, probably in the next two months — an outline proposal. Obviously there will be a big issue around funding so we will have to look at how that will be staged, etc.”
Asked about the approximate cost of a new ED, Mr Duffy said this was being worked on currently. The feasibility study concerns location, size and cost issues.
A hospital board meeting in January 2015 agreed that a new ED was “the top priority” for the hospital, in the context of issues to be pursued with the Minister for Health against the background of limited funding.
The importance of flexibility in plans for a new ED in view of potential reconfiguration of EDs in the city and the possibility of Beaumont becoming a trauma centre was highlighted at a board meeting in March 2015.
